Research has shown that doing crosswords, among other things, helps to keep the brain cell active and so assists in memory and retention power. There are several types of crosswords and so one would benefit if he starts with simple ones and then movers on to the more difficult cryptic that make you think in a different way. I have personally found doing crossword to be an absorbing hobby and a good strategy to improve vocabulary. As for concentration, yes, if you are stuck with a particular clue and you are determined to find the answer, you do tend to concentrate.

They are very good for sharpening up your thinking processes.
Once you have got used to cryptic crosswords, I think they are much easier than simple ones because there are usually two parts to the clue, and they both help confirm the answer.
